European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
