Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio
The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Comeback
At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.
He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
