Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
